In 1852, Levi Strauss, an immigrant from Bavaria, decided to manufacture durable clothes for the local hardworking people during the California Gold Rush. He and tailor Jacob Davis combined copper rivet reinforcements with tough denim, leading to the first manufactured waist overalls, now called "blue jeans."
